Cruel conmen targeted an elderly woman outside Lidl in Knaresborough, before going on a spending spree with the woman’s stolen bank card.

The 83-year-old woman was approached in the car park on York Road by a man and woman described as Eastern European on Wednesday December 13 at around 3.20pm.

The pair distracted the woman, telling her she had dropped a £5 note and while her attention was diverted stole her bank card from her hand bag.

They then went on a shopping spree spending £600 on the card in the space of two hours before the victim realised her card was missing.

Police are warning members of the public to be vigilant and are liaising with forces in other areas where similar incidents have taken place.

In the meantime they are asking people to be on their guard against anyone who approaches them in this way.

Anyone who was in Lidl car park on York Road, Knaresborough around the time of the incident is asked to contact Harrogate police.
