Cases in Harrogate Magistrates this week
The following were dealt with at Harrogate Magistrates Court on May 5:
Dwain Carl Layton, 25, of 39 King Edward Road, Ripon, was given a nine-week prison sentence for assaulting a woman by beating her. Magistrates said a custodial sentence was warranted because he had kicked the woman on the ground while wearing shoes, and because he had similar previous convictions. He was ordered to pay a victim surcharge of £115. No separate penalty was imposed for failing to surrender to bail, or for using threatening abusive or insulting words or behaviour with intent to cause fear of violence.
Ashley Paul Watson, 21, of 38 Oak Road, Lead Lane, Ripon, was committed to prison for 12 weeks for breaching a restraining order by approaching a woman he had previously assaulted. He was ordered to pay compensation of £100 and made subject to a further five-year restraining order, lasting until May 4, 2021.
Sarah Louise Ishak, 28, of 18 St Cuthbert’s Close, Ripon, was given an 18-month community order for failing to notify Harrogate Borough Council of a change in circumstances affecting her entitlement to housing and council tax benefit. She was ordered to take part in a Women’s Programme and to pay costs of £85 and a victim surcharge of £60.
David James White, 36, of 147 Skipton Road, Harrogate, was given a one-month curfew for stealing a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses at the Royal Mail in Claro Court Business Centre, Harrogate, jointly with Deborah Lesley Williams. He was ordered to pay compensation of £34.50.
Deborah Lesley Williams, 40, of 147 Skipton Road, Harrogate, was given a 14-day prison sentence for stealing a pair of Ray-Ban sunglasses, jointly with David James White, at the Royal Mail in Claro Court Business Centre. She was ordered to pay compensation of £34.50 for failing to comply with a previous supervision order, she was given a further 14-day sentence to run concurrently with the first.
