Franklin Road, Strawberry Dale Terrace and Mayfield Grove have been blocked by officers, leading to disruption to traffic on some of the town's busiest streets, including Kings Road, Skipton Road and Bower Road.

Armed officers have been spotted patrolling the road-blocks.

Whilst the police have not yet confirmed what has happened, unconfirmed reports suggest they were responding to the possibility of a man in possession of a weapon.

A passer-by said: "Police were clearly keen to keep everyone away from the scene. The road was blocked and there were what seemed to be armed officers at the scene."

There have also been reports of a man being led away from the scene in handcuffs.

North Yorkshire Police are set to release a statement imminently.
