A charity auction in aid of the Yorkshire Dales Rivers Trust has raised almost £5,000.

The auction was held at Swinton Park, home of Lord Masham, President of the Trust on Friday March 21.

Top price lot was a fishing rod donated by Orvis of Harrogate which sold for £500.

Other lots at the auction included: day out fishing experiences, a family day ticket to the Great Yorkshire Show, prime Coverdale lamb, and lunch at Ripon Spa Hotel.

Supporters of the Trust saw Sir Ian Botham present the rod to the winning bidder before giving an inspirational talk on the joys of fly fishing.

Sir Ian said fishing was a wonderfully relaxing activity and had proved to be a great way of relieving the stress of his busy life.

He also paid tribute to the Rivers Trust’s conservation work.

Andrew Brown isRivers Trust Chairman.

He said: “All the money raised by our auction will be used fund work aimed at reducing river bank erosion.

“Cutting down erosion will help prevent sediment smothering gravel spawning areas vital to maintain populations of salmon and brown trout.”
