Champagne connoisseurs could be clinking their flutes in excitement after plans for Harrogate’s first champagne tasting bar and shop were submitted to the council.

If approved, The Champagne Concept would set up its stall on Oxford Street and offer more than 100 bottles of bubbly to be sampled and purchased.

Owner Laurence Connolly said he was inspired to open the bar after visiting similar shops during visits to the Épernay region in France and realising there was a ‘gap in the market’.

“Unfortunately, you can’t get all of these different types of champagne in the UK at the moment so you are just left to choose from the big brands.

“We have been living in Harrogate for a number of years and we think it’s the perfect place to showcase these champagnes.”

Visitors will have the chance to sample a flight of different champagnes before making their purchase. The premises will also operate as a bar for occasions such as pre-dinner or pre-theatre drinks.

Mr Connolly is hoping that customers will be able to learn more about the champagne they are tasting and believes ‘fizz’ could be the next thing to take off in the food and drink industry.

He said: “Some have a great family history and we want to give people the chance to buy champagne with a great story.”

The Champagne Concept will open in mid-October if their plans are approved.
