Mayor to open first pound shop

Savvy Harrogate shoppers are expected to flood to the Victoria Centre today, as Harrogate’s first pound shop opens its doors.

Mayor of Harrogate Coun Mike Newby will cut the ribbon at the 5,000 sq ft store where everythng costs a £1, before stocking up on thermal socks and haribo sweets.

He said: “I need a pair of thermal socks to keep me warm when I’m doing civic duties.

“It’s good for any town centre to have a variety of shops. Poundworld will help provide a good balance.”

Harrogate resident’s took to social media with excitement ahead of the store’s launch.

Helen Lunn on Facecbook said: “I think it’s great that a pound shop is opening. I will definitely be shopping there.”

Michael Upton on Twitter said: “Good idea, might put pressure on other retailers to be more competitively priced.”

Chris Jameson on Twitter went so far as to say: “Notice the new pound shop has got massive bars of Toblerone for £1.That’s got to be great for the town!”

Many people have commented that the budget shop, which has taken three units in the Victoria Shopping Centre, is preferable to empty units.

Alan Huddart tweeted: “Anything that fills empty shops is good by me.” While on Facebook Helen Nash said: “Helen Nash In for a for a pound, happy to give it a whirl and far better than boarded-up, empty shops.”

Not everyone was happy to welcome the new store. On Twitter Rich Hoyle said: “I’d rather have a John Lewis. But I suppose it’s better than another empty shop.”
