Kirsty’s global first for AONB

The endeavours of the Nidderdale Chamber of Trade’s new treasurer have been rewarded after the Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) secured a Google listing.

Kirsty Shepherd, who is the youngest member of the Pateley-based chamber’s new board of directors, spotted that, unlike other AONBs listed on Google, Nidderdale wasn’t given its rightful designation.

With Nidderdale sitting centrally between the two days of stages of the Tour de France in Yorkshire, Kirsty was especially conscious that the eyes of the world will be focused on exploring the area for interesting places to visit and stay.

And she saw the potential to give the local economy a real boost by setting the record straight on Google.

Kirsty, the daughter of successful Fellbeck dairy farmers, the Oldest Sweet Shop’s online technical administrator and a key member of the chamber’s new website team, began the long hours of research to compile and submit a map, carefully plotting woodlands, roads, rivers, walls and the Yorkshire Dales boundaries.

Both her first and second attempts were rejected but, with typical Yorkshire grit, Kirsty was determined to succeed and contacted Google for some guidance, gaining the help of their senior map making team.

Effort number three was accepted and a delighted Kirsty accredited with its creation.

l The next meeting of the Nidderdale Chamber of Trade will be held on Wednesday, April 30, at 6.30pm in the Nidderdale Plus Meeting Room, 7 The Old Workhouse, Pateley Bridge.
