Great response to new town boutique

The owners of Wetherby’s newest womenswear boutique officially opened their doors this week with a pledge of unparalleled customer service and the return of the shopping ‘experience’.

Jane Whittaker and Yvette Langton have been overwhelmed by the immediate success of Room 43 on Wetherby High Street, which was officially opened on Tuesday evening by the Mayor of Wetherby, Coun Cindy Bentley, in front of more than 100 invited guests.

Jane, who has a background in fashion retail and also worked for a bespoke tailor, said owning her own store had been a dream for some time.

“I’d got to the point where I didn’t want to work for someone else any longer,” she said.

“I knew Yvette as our children were at the same school; she’s had her own retail outlet before and has always had a keen eye for good-quality, desirable clothes. She decided to start her own shop and asked for my help – and I asked her if we could become a partnership.”

Guests at the launch enjoyed champagne and canapés before heading across the road to Sant Angelo’s restaurant for a special fashion show that showcased some of the shop’s main lines, including cashmere, tweed and trench coats.

As well as clothing, Room 43 carries leather boots, handbags and accessories such as jewellery, stockings, hats, scarves and gloves and rare brands from Ireland hardly found on mainland Britain. Although mostly aimed at the over-30s, Room 43 also has some ranges aimed at younger women, including the Bohemia label. Jane and Yvette are also currently developing their own label, Langton Whittaker.

“It’s very exciting and we look forward to introducing that to our customers,” said Jane.

“Our ultimate aim is to become a thriving boutique with a reputation for providing the highest-quality desirable clothes in an environment that makes people feel pampered and special – and also to have our own label in boutiques across the country that share our ethos of great customer service.”

And Jane and Yvette have promised to continue to develop the feel of personal consultancy, saying attention to detail will be their trademark.

“We’re not about fast fashion – where you go into a shop, grab something you like the look of and rush out. We’re focusing on quality collectables, the core pieces that make up an enduring wardrobe,” said Jane.

“We wanted to create a sumptuous, welcoming environment where it’s a delight to feel the clothes and enjoy the surroundings. We also wanted to cater for the men who are often dragged along with their partners during shopping trips – so we’ve got a great coffee machine and comfortable chairs where they can sit and relax with the papers or a magazine rather than standing around getting bored!”
