Business owners in Harrogate are teaming up this June to encourage people in the community to spend their money in local shops and help our local economy.
From June 1 - 14, businesses in Harrogate and Wetherby will be taking part in a ‘Buy Local’ campaign, persuading people to spend their money in small local shops rather than big chain supermarkets.
Shops including The Cheeseboard, Ake and Humphris, Posh Paws, Olivia Grace, the Rocking Horse, and Quality Health Foods will all be doing their bit for local people and independent businesses with offers.
Gemma Hayes, The Cheeseboard, said: “We love being part of the community here in Harrogate and pride ourselves on really doing our bit to keep the area alive.
“We know convenience is key but we ask the people of Harrogate to simply spend one day during our campaign to pop in and see us so that you can see for yourself who we are and what we do.”
As part of the fortnight campaign, people can have the chance to win cash prizes of up to £100 by posting or tweeting a selfie with your favourite local business with the hashtag ‘#BuyLocalSelfie’.
The campaign is supported by local marketing business, The Best of Harrogate, who are dedicated to championing everything positive in the Harrogate area and hope to turn it into an annual event for the whole community to enjoy.
Alex Hewitt, The Best of Harrogate, said: “We know Harrogate is a great place to live and do business and so we wanted to really shout about how great some of our local businesses are and why people should use them. I am pledging to buy local for the entire fortnight. No supermarket shopping for me.”
So far the campaign has been very successful, with some local businesses reporting that they have seen around 20 more customers than usual visiting their shop, and already some winners for the cash prizes available.
The Best of Harrogate will also be encouraging people to ‘Buy Local’ at the Yorkshire Farmers’ Markets in Harrogate on June 11 and in Wetherby on June 14.
