Harrogate’s first budget supermarket has been given the go ahead by council planners.

Aldi is set to open in the former Dreams bed store on Harrogate Retail Park, off Skipton Road.

The German owned budget supermarket chain has gone from strength to strength in recent years, increasing its UK sales by 29.4 per cent in the last quarter of 2013.

Last year Aldi announced plans to open stores in both Ripon and Wetherby.

In their application to Harrogate Borough Council, developer Savills said: “The discount sector of the grocery market has developed significantly over the last ten years, with particular growth in popularity recently as the UK has experienced an economic downturn,” and say the store will create around 18 jobs.

Brian Dunsby, chief executive of Harrogate Chamber of Trade and Commerce said: “I think the brand and the pricing of Aldi will be attractive,” when plans were first submitted in January.

“There has long been calls for a supermarket on the north side of Harrogate, and it will be convenient for people living at Jennyfields and Bilton who at the moment have to travel into town to do a supermarket shop.”

What do you think? Are you looking forward to Aldi opening?
