Bramham set to mark 40th in style

Bramham International Horse Trials will celebrate 40 years in style this weekend.

The world-renowned four-day horse eventing competition will be taking place at Bramham Park from this Thursday, June 6.

Olympic medallists, royalty and more than 500 horses are expected to grace the coveted turf in a range of competitions over the four days at the in the iconic Yorkshire Park.

Competitions in eventing and showjumping will take place, as well as a number of popular events for families which include a food festival, adventure area, childrens entertainment zone and more than 130 trade stands.

Bramham spokesman Winnie Murphy said: “Bramham will be celebrating a milestone birthday – the big 40 - as Yorkshire’s premier equestrian fixture.

“The number forty will feature in Ian Stark’s cross country course this year and he has some ingenious fences planned to test horse and rider.”

There’s also top-class action over the coloured poles over the weekend including the Bramham Classic, the Yorkshire Post Open, a new class.

Zara Phillips, The Queen’s granddaughter, has been confirmed as attending this year’s event.

Phillips finished third in the 2012 with horse High Kingdom with the pairing going on to help Great Britain to a team eventing silver medal at the London Olympics.

Olympic team medallist winners William Fox-Pitt, Sharon Hunt and Daisy Dick will all travel to Yorkshire with horses who could be in the reckoning for this year’s top honours in one of the three classes on offer.

The chosen charity to benefit from this year’s event is the Firefighters Charity.

They will attend the event together with the Fire and Rescue Services from West Yorkshire and Humberside region will be on-site raising awareness of their work with horses and fundraising, culminating with the spectacular “Bramham Challenge Run”, always a crowd puller, at 1pm on Sunday, June 9.

Members of the public are being urged to join in with the challenge.

Away from all things horsey, there’s plenty for everyone at the weekend.

Action and adrenaline are key in the Action and Adventure Area where visitors can have a go on quad bikes, Segways, the bungee trampoline and the chance to truly walk on water with Zorb Balling.

For those with a canine friend they can go along as the Tailwaggers Club will keep them entertained.

Over 130 tradestands are on site and the rural crafts marquee is set to offer gourmet treats, local produce, artisan delicacies.
