Allotment Society Quiz Night: hosted by Boroughbridge Allotment Society the quiz night, which is open to all comers, takes place tomorrow evening at Boroughbridge Social Club. Doors open at 7.30pm for a 8pm start. There will also be a raffle. The price is £4 per team with up to four members per team. For more information about the society please see or email

Friday Night is Music Night: on the fourth Friday of each month this group gets together for a music night when everybody is welcome to sing, play or just listen. There is a different theme for each evening which has included Yorkshire folk songs, humorous songs, Gilbert and Sullivan, songs from the shows, party pieces, favourite hymns, 1930s sing-a-long and village carols with suggestions for future themes welcome. Sometimes there are guest performers who lead the group or make a presentation, on other occasions the group sings or plays instruments, it is very informal. There is no charge but people bring a small plate of food with coffee and tea being provided. There is a charity collection with recipients including Boroughbridge Community Care, Hope and Homes, Jennyruth Workshops, Alne Hall Cheshire Homes, NSPCC and Macmillan Cancer Care. Soup and Sweet: Boroughbridge Methodist Church has a soup and sweet lunch on Saturday from noon-1.30pm. There is a choice of soups and sweets with coffee, great value at just £5.

Yore Film Society: has a screening of The Help on Tuesday at the Coronation Hall, starting at 8pm. This 2011 12A USA drama is the story of an aspiring author during the civil right movement of the 1960s who decides to write a book detailing the African-American maid’s point of view on the white families for whom they work and the hardships they go through on a daily basis. There will be a bar, plus tea and coffee.

Women’s Day of Prayer: is being celebrated next Friday, March 1 in St James Church, Boroughbridge at 2pm. I was a stranger and you welcomed me is this year’s theme organised by the women of France. Although organised and led by women, this is essentially a day of prayer for everybody and all are welcome to attend.

Kirby Hill Quiz: Kirby Hill School PTS has a quiz night with a pie and pea supper next Friday, March 1 at 7.30pm in the school hall. All are welcome, tickets are £10 each and are available from the school. Please bring along your own bottle. Later in the month, the PTA has a fashion show in the school hall on Friday, March 22. Discounted ladies’ and children’s clothes will be on sale and there will be a raffle and refreshments. Adult entry is £1 with children admitted free.

Kirby Hill Bingo Night: the Friends of Kirby Hill Church are holding a bingo night in the Coronation Hall next Saturday, March 2 at 7.30pm. Admission is £5 which includes supper and there is a jackpot first prize of £100.

Church Services: this Sunday there is a Family Service at Aldborough at 10am and services of Parish Communion at St James Church, Boroughbridge at 10am and at Minskip at 10am. Boroughbridge Methodist Church has Sunday Worship at 10.30am. There is Morning Prayer at Cundall at 9.30am, Holy Communion at Skelton at 9.30am and a Family Service at Kirby Hill at 11am. On Wednesday there are services of Holy Communion at Aldborough at 8.30am and at St James Church at 10.45am.
