Boost for allotment society after MP’s good fortune

BOROUGHBRIDGE Allotment Society has been given a boost after the town’s MP got lucky in a competition at Westminster.

Andrew Jones won £250 of garden centre vouchers at a parliamentary reception sponsored by B&Q and immediately thought of the Boroughbridge group, whose allotments were officially opened in May.

Knowing the society’s ambition to develop more allotment plots, Mr Jones – who planted a commemorative tree at last year’s opening – contacted allotment-keeper Coun Robert Windass to see if the vouchers could be put to good use.

The MP said: “There are always long queues for allotments and when I won the vouchers I immediately thought of the Boroughbridge scheme.

“The community and town council worked so hard to set the allotments up and I wanted to offer my continuing support to them.

“Donating the vouchers so that more allotments could be opened seemed an ideal way to do that.”

The society will use the vouchers to pay for equipment to run water into a new section so that more allotment plots can be created.

Coun Windass said: “This was a very welcome gift from Andrew. As an allotment-holder myself, I know just how useful this donation will be in opening up more plots for local people.”
