School News: pupils’ from Bishop Thornton CE Primary School will be visiting Leeds Art Galley this month

Harvest Festival: Bishop Thornton CE Primary School Harvest Festival in St John’s CE Church Bishop Thornton 9.30am where everyone is welcome to join the services. Gifts of tins and packets to be distributed afterwards through the locally homeless project. St Joseph’s Catholic Harvest Festival Liturgy at 9.30am on October 11 in school followed by tea and coffee, everyone welcome. The donations of food, fruit and vegetables will be donated to needy families in the diocese.

Tennis Lessons: this autumn term for Reception Years 1, 2.and 3 children from Bishop Thornton CE Primary School mini tennis lessons will take place in Ripley Town Hall on Tuesdays , 4.45-5.30pm, 5.30pm -6pm-6.15pm. For further information contact Caroline Buncall direct on 07843342662 or e-mail

Prayer Book: during the spring term, each school in the diocese was invited to contribute prayers towards a CAFOD prayer book as part of the Year of Faith. The prayer book has been just published and prayers by two pupils form St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School were included. Well Done! Each class has a copy of the prayer book for use in class worship. Thank You: Mr A Bastable new head master for St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, would like to thank you all for your kind words of welcome at the start of the new term in beautiful Bishop Thornton and looks forward to meeting everybody over the coming weeks. Welcome too the new starters who have joined the school, it’s been great to see them settle into school life. To mark the start of the a new school year a celebration Mass took place with parents, family and friends on September 23.

Building Work: as a result of the work which took place over the summer in the school buildings and grounds of St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, the FS/KS1 classroom now has an extensive outdoor provision area that has soft flooring and an extended area that is fully fenced. Feed back from the children is very positive. A ramp allowing wheelchair access has also been installed at the front of school and includes a handrail and a raised flower bed. Other building work include a shower and tiling with access rail in the hygiene room as well as an improved alarm and detection system in the junior classroom. Thank you to all those families who have made voluntary contributions this term. This is a very important aspect of the school fundraising and helps to ensure that the school can pay for continuing improvements.

Vouchers: please collect your Morrison Garden Vouchers and hand them in to St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School, instead of leaving them in a drawers pockets and handbags and don’t forget to ask for them with your shopping too, every little helps the school.

Bag2 School: £120 was raised in the collection of clothing and other recyclables last term at St Joseph’s Catholic Primary School. The next collection will be on Friday, November 8. Thank you to everyone for their generosity in supporting the school.
