Woman Institute: Bishop Thornton and Shaw Mills members has an attendance of 50 people at their open meeting in Ripley Town Hall, where the guest speaker was Christine Baker who spent time in Gambia with her husband. Both Christine and her husband are members of Methodist Church and were gradually introduced to the idea of spending six moths in Gambia teaching and helping local people, all this was done at their own expense. Christine’s work was to set up a dental unit and her husband’s to teach local children. Their accommodation was very simple and had few facilities. Washing clothes was done in a bucket and Christine could not understand why they took so long to dry, it eventually came to her that it was because of the high humidity. Both Christine and her husband thoroughly enjoy their work in Gambia and have returned a few times since to visit the friends that they had made out there. It was a very enlighting evening for members and Christine brought through to everyone the essence of her visit that was started reluctantly considering that they were both in retirement age. There have been a number of forthcoming events coming up with the Nidd Valley Group dinner and a spring council meeting as well as invitations to other institutes .One of these was to see Clair Spooner of Quaintrelie at Sawley WI. Claire is a trained milliner from Patley Bridge and collects vintage hats. She talked about the construction and types of materials used years ago and some people had the opportunity to try the hats on. It was a good evening and a lovely supper was served by Sawley WI. As usual members extend an invitation to anyone to come along and try their meetings, and a few events in the hope that that you might like to join .Why not come with a friend?
