Birstwith WI: our visiting speaker on Thursday, November 8 was Jenny Stacey who described her talk as a Christmas Medley. She demonstrated how attractive Christmas decorations can be made. From old Christmas cards she produced lovely baubles of differing sizes simply by cutting out circles and fixing them together with tiny staples. Then using the inside roll from kitchen foil or similar she made crackers and decorated them suitably for various occasions. She made gift boxes, lovely butterflies and much more. Each specimen made in a few minutes. “Really very simple” she said, we were not so sure! Margaret Shepherd.

Birstwith Walks: both walks on Saturday, December 15 will be about four miles long, start from the village shop and go via lanes and back roads rather than field paths. The morning walk will leave from the shop at 10am and go via Clint, St Thomas a Becket church, Hampsthwaite, Swincliffe and Hirst Lane. On return to the village shop those who wish can purchase food and drinks for a short lunch break on the village green (or in the bus shelter if wet). The afternoon walk will start at 1pm and go via West Syke Green, Felliscliffe church, Kettlesing, Longscales and St James’s church to finish at The Station. The walks will be at a pace to suit those taking part. You can do both or only the morning or the afternoon walk. If you bring dogs you must keep them under control. You will need clothing and footwear appropriate to the weather and possibly something to drink and eat along the way. Provisional dates for 2013 are: Sunday, January 27 starting from The Station; Saturday, February 16 starting from the village shop.
