Bettys seeks new chief of chocolate

It’s a tough job, but someone’s got to chew it.

Harrogate-based Bettys is looking to recruit a chocolate manager to follow in the footsteps of founder Frederick Belmont, a Swiss master chocolatier and confectioner.

The manager will take charge of a team at Bettys’ Harrogate base, travel in search of the finest cocoa beans and eat plenty of chocolate.

However, the successful applicant will also be charged with maintaining the standards set by the company, one of Yorkshire’s most famous exports.

Last week, the Harrogate Advertiser revealed the company posted record-breaking pre-tax profits of £10m for the first time in its 94-year history.

Caroline Grant, Bakery General Manager at Bettys Craft Bakery, said: “Chocolate and patisserie were key parts of Bettys early success when we opened in 1919 and are a very important element of Bettys future.

“We are searching for an outstanding craftsperson and manager to step into the shoes of our founder, Frederick Belmont, a most gifted Swiss master chocolatier and confectioner.

“The new manager will have sound expertise in working with chocolate and cakes and the leadership skills to head up our teams of chocolatiers and confectioners.

“As Bettys fame for fine handmade chocolates and cakes continues to grow internationally through our expanding online shop, the successful applicant will be helping to inspire new delights for our discerning customers while maintaining Frederick’s exacting high standards and attention to detail.

“As well as developing our capability to achieve future growth, the new manager will be responsible for setting, managing and achieving budgets and driving continuous improvement.”

Chocolate making courses at Bettys Cookery School in Starbeck will be run by the manager, and they will work with professional bodies such as the Academy of Culinary Arts.

Caroline Grant added: “As an employer, Bettys has earned a reputation for being a family business that people are proud to work for.
“We really value our people and the personal skills, experience and qualities that they bring. Staff tend to stay with us for a long time.

“We offer an attractive profit share bonus paying quarterly throughout the year, free meals at work, generous staff discounts, excellent in house training and exciting career development opportunities.”
