Better Part of Valour on stage

The Better Part of Valour, which runs until Saturday November 14, features the men who were subjected to the first phosgene attack on British troops at Ypre in December 1915.

“They were also involved in a delayed second wave attack to take Poelkappelle, the last strategic target to enable the notorious attack on Paschendale Ridge in October 1917,” added a production spokesman.

“As well as using these important engagements as a basis for the story, Keith Burton’s ambitious work also combines local contemporary Nidderdale references, two love stories and a whodunnit, all of which makes for an unmissable piece of theatre.”

They added: “Faced with the challenge of presenting a World War One Battlefield, the backstage crew have once again risen to the occasion: a multi-level stage depicts a French Chateau (Battlefield HQ) and the front-line trenches, and the play also makes use of back-projection and filmed inserts.”

Depicting the young volunteers engaged in the action are Harry Judd, Matt Anson, Billy Skeet and Josh Macey, who all make their debuts on the Playhouse stage.

The Better Part of Valour will be presented at 7.30pm nightly to Saturday November 14, with a matinee at 2.30pm on Saturday November 14.
