Bed Race teams decided in draw

The 90 teams that are to take part in this year’s Great Knaresborough Bed Race have been selected by a lottery draw.

Although there was delight from those who were picked, there was disappointment from 38 teams who applied for the race this year but were not successful in the draw.

“The 90 teams came from 128 to have entered this year,” said Bed Race chairman Martin Brock.

“This means 38 have been disappointed. Last year there were 53 who didn’t get through the draw and the year before there were 33.

“We are sorry that this has to happen, but the fact is we have a maximum of 90 for the race field because of restrictions on space at the start and finish line.”

Knaresborough Lions, the organisers of Bed Race, give guaranteed places to the previous year’s winners, to groups lending help to the organisers and to event sponsors.

“We have 14 sponsors this year,” added Martin Brock.

“Given that the cost of mounting the Bed Race has risen to over £20,000, the event just simply wouldn’t happen without this sponsorship. We are very grateful for their support.

“Expenses have rocketed over the past 10 years due to legislative changes and the way that things have to be done. Also, in 2008, the police said they could no longer provide the free traffic management services as they once did. So we have to pay a traffic management company, as well as fund the hiring of crowd barriers, signage and safety equipment. Other costs include the printing of the Programme, Public Liability Insurance, street cleaning, first aid provision, catering and licensing.”

The draw was made on March 11 at Knaresborough Working Men’s Club. All entrants were invited to attend and many of those present drew the lots.

This year’s race on Saturday, June 13, will be the 50th in an unbroken tradition going back to 1966. It raises money for charity and good causes.
