Author helps mark 400th anniversary

In the afternoon he worked with students on literacy activities, inspiring them to write as he discussed how to develop a character in a story and how as an author you have to be resilient and never give up on your hopes and dreams.

Then in the evening Gervase entertained a packed house of students, parents, staff and alumni with tales of his time as a teacher and Ofsted Inspector and his celebrity status, all delivered in his uniquely funny yet touching style.

Headteacher Carl Sugden said: “It was a great pleasure to welcome Gervase into school to help us to celebrate 400 years of education in Knaresborough. 

“He gave of his time freely and spent the afternoon with captivated and enthralled students.

“The evening event drew in very many members of the community and many former students, some of whom had not been back into school for over 40 years. 

“It was a captivating and enjoyable evening to kickstart our year of celebration.”
