Appeal to help name 1911 Challenge Cup players

Wetherby Athletic and Thorpe United will be playing for the Barkston Ash Challenge Cup on Monday at Selby Town.

And as the two head in to battle a photograph of the 1911 winners - John Smith’s AFC - has been discovered.

Barkston Ash secretary Brian Coutts is now calling for help to identify team members.

“I was contacted by Charlette Edwards from Portmahomack, north of Inverness, whose grandfather PG Alexandre, was a member of that winning team.

“Charlette after having a clear out contacted the Barkston Ash District FA and donated the photo.”

Brian added: “If any readers recognise family members in the photo I can provide them with a copy if the email [email protected]

“From a bit of research I have done, as it was just before the First World War to see if there were any casualties, I only found the one.”

The Cup in the photo was bought by the Barkston Ash District FA in 1901-02 and is the exact same cup that Thorpe United and Wetherby Athletic will be playing for on Monday.

Both teams are hoping to add their name to the trophy for a second time. Wetherby first won the cup in 2008 and Thorpe United in 2012.
