8am PICTURE UPDATE: Tractor sliced in two by train near Knaresborough

A train hit a tractor at a level crossing between Knaresborough and Cattal on Thursday evening.

British Transport Police confirmed the tractor driver was been taken to hospital.

Three passengers on the train suffered minor injuries.

Fire, ambulance and police crews were in attendance, and the A59 was closed until 9.30pm as services dealt with the incident.

On Twitter, BTP posted: “We’re on scene at a level crossing in #Knaresborough after a train struck a tractor. Tractor driver has been taken to hospital.”

North Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service confirmed five appliances were at the scene.

All services between Leeds and York via Harrogate were replaced by bus services for the evening.

A spokesperson for Northern Rail told the ‘Advertiser: “The 5.29pm Leeds to York service struck a vehicle on a level crossing between Knaresborough and Cattal.

“The incident was reported at 6.20pm.”
