6 best displays at the Harrogate Autumn Flower show

1. In at number one was the display by bulb and plant specialists, Jacques Amand. Featuring a variety of Eucomis plants including the eucomis bicolor and the sparkling burgundy as well as the long allium summer drummers either side, it’s no surprise that this awe inspiring display won the all new showstopper award. The award was introduced to the show for the first time this year and was presented to business co-owner Nesta Jolliff.

2. Number two was certainly not second place at the show by any stretch - another award-winning display, Robinson’s colourful creation of a fruit and veg shrine was enough to grab them the trophy for best in the show. The hazardously healthy arrangement featured fruit and vegetables so rare that you can only grow them from the mail-order seeds that Robinson’s stock.

3. In third was a tropical paradise that made you feel like you’d just stepped foot in the jungle. But based only in Liverpool you have to give commendation to Don Billington who specialises in tropical plants and bromeliads and spent days setting up this wild wonderland.

4. Fourth place is taken by Devine Nurseries with their static firework display of gladioli. The business based in Hull specialise in the plant and had an un-missable explosion of vibrant colour on display with 28 different varieties of ‘glads’ and over 900 stalks. So it’s no wonder the show was going glad-mad with examinations for gladioli judges, visitors coming out in force to see the plants, and business over Tony Devine saying they’d taken a lot of orders for the plants just on the first day of the show.

5. At number five was a vibrant variety of violet. Taylors Clematis specialise is these climbing creatures which use their tendrils to latch onto something before they grow-crazy all over it. Business owner Chris Cocks told us that all you need to recreate this dazzling display is an obelisk - a pyramid structure for the plant to attach itself to - and the best bit is they flower every month of the year, so you can enjoy them all year round!

6. Last but definitely not least.. It’s the classic chrysanthemum. These big beautiful bodied flowers are a favourite of everyone’s. With their friendly and inviting appearance they had to have a place on the leader board. And you might well recognise the name of the exhibitor, Chrysanthemums Direct, from our coverage of the Great Yorkshire Show. The Knutsford based business was a prize-winner at this year’s GYS with their floral fabulousness as well.
