Slideshow: TV show’s return inspires bakers

The Great British Bake Off returned to our television screens earlier this month and to celebrate the Harrogate Advertiser put out an appeal for readers to send in pictures of their creations.

The first to answer the call was Harrogate woman Katie Davill.

The 26-year-old private client solicitor shared pictures of cakes she and friend Abi Sutcliffe, 23, also of Harrogate, have baked.

Katie said she began baking after being inspired by her grandma.

“My grandma used to make the most wonderful egg custard tarts,” Katie said. “She was definitely my inspiration.”

Her inspiration now comes from Great British Bake Off host Mary Berry, as well as a desire to try new recipes and be creative.

“I love the Great British Bake Off.

“But, who doesn’t? My mum keeps threatening to enter me on it, but I think I’d get too stressed if things weren’t going my way. I’m imagining the Baked Alaska ‘bincident’,” she said.

Katie, who has never entered any competitions, said her speciality is a good, old fashioned Victoria sandwich cake or banoffee pie.

“During the Bake Off I try and attempt something from the show each weekend,” she said. “Not all of them are successful but most are delicious.”

She was particularly proud of her rainbow, hot air balloon cake.

“It was a miracle - and delicious,” she said.
