Family-run Bondgate Fisheries, managed by Colin and Janet Kaye, will mark the day with a series of promotions and deals designed to boost the coffers of the Fishermen’s Mission charity.

The community chippie has decorated its shop to mark the event and customers will be encouraged to donate money saved on special deals. Raffle tickets will be on sale, with three winners selected at the end of the day to win a family fish supper. Side orders such as mushy peas, gravy or curry sauce will be given away with every serving for a small contribution to the charity.

Janet Kaye said: “We all agree nothing can beat a portion of steaming fresh white fish fried in hot, crispy batter, served with a pile of lip-smacking chips – the only debate is whether you top it with salt, vinegar, sauce, mushy peas, curry sauce or a pickled egg!

“So celebrate British fish and chips and join in with National Fish & Chip Day on Friday, June 3 by coming down to Bondgate Fisheries and enjoying a good old-fashioned Friday night fish supper and help fundraise for a very worthy cause.”

The Fishermen’s Mission offers support to fishermen and their families, as well as a vital emergency response service. Fishermen who have been shipwrecked or injured, and families who have been devastated by loss or poverty have benefited.

The aim of National Fish & Chip Day is to raise levels of recognition of the dish and secure its position as the nation’s favourite. The event, which will take place annually on the first Friday in June, already has the backing of key players in the industry, such as trade organisation the National Edible Oil Distributors’ Association (NEODA).

NEODA president Andrew Marriott said: “National Fish and Chip Day celebrates the stars who work hard to bring Brits their favourite traditional takeaway. We want to bring the whole industry together to celebrate and showcase the great British institution that is fish and chips.”

“To help build support in anticipation for the event, we are urging people to start tweeting with the hashtag #NationalFishandChipDay.”
