Faith Douglas's perfect events in North Yorkshire beauty spot to restore wellbeing and love of nature

A well-known author, curator and horticulturalist has launched a series of wellness walks in one of North Yorkshire's most beautful outdoor attractions and nature spots.

Faith Douglas, who works as curator of Thorp Perrow, with its magnificent Victorian arboretum with tea room, birds of prey and animal collections, turns her expertise at proven mindfulness techniques to positively promote physical and mental health in the half-day sessions, leaving participants with a deep sense of calm which carries on afterwards as they slip back into everyday life.

Having begun her career as a nurse, Faith was inspired to retrain in horticulture from her long-term love of all things nature.

As well as becoming curator at Thorp Perrow near Bedale, Faith has worked for local charity Horticap delivering horticulture as therapy to adults with a wide range of learning disabilities.

In 2016 Faith led a group from Help for Heroes to assist with the build on the ‘Welcome to Yorkshire’ garden at the Chelsea Flower Show designed by Matthew Wilson.

The garden went on the win a Silver Award and the People’s Choice Award.

Her recent book The Nature Remedy: A Restorative Guide to the Natural World in which Faith looked at all areas of nature to show how trees, birds, insects, seasons, the weather can impact us for the better, how they can heal and improve our mental and physical wellbeing, won critical praise from the national media on its publication last year.

The Daily Telegraph said it was "‘packed with beautiful images, recipes, remedies, meditations and fascinating ideas."

Faith said: "I see first-hand, not just for myself but for others too, the benefits of being within nature. It is not just people who may be unwell, in a chaotic world, it is something we can all benefit from.

"My aim is to introduce, deliver and teach not just those in need of therapy.”

The result of a life of gaining knowledge are the events she now organises through Forest Bathing UK, a company she set up to bring something back to the UK that other countries and cultures still practice today, something we have lost over the centuries.

Faith said: "Cultures all over the world practise a technique called ‘Forest Bathing’ – in Japanese it’s called ‘Shinrin-yoku’, in Mandarin it is ‘Sēnlínyù’ and in Korean it’s known as sanlimyok.

"Some countries have designated woodlands and forests purely for the purpose of relaxation and connecting within nature."

The wellness sessions also include an insight into the practise of mindful journaling, herbal tea and refreshments and an invitation to spend the rest of the day exploring the beautiful grounds of the arboretum at Thorp Perrow.
