Transplant patient beats isolation on virtual walks

A transplant patient is escaping her Covid-19 isolation by going on virtual walks with family and friends.

Joanne Sanderson, of Cliffe Terrace, Wetherby, is on the extremely vulnerable list during the Coronavirus because she had a major transplant in 2018 and has other health issues.

“I have had a pancreas/kidney transplant, have a low immune system and am on steroids so have been shielding since March,” explained Joanne.

Joanne, who was medically retired from the Prison Service in 2007, turned to exercise while preparing for her transplant in 2018.

“I joined Gymophobics in Wetherby four years ago, whilst on the transplant waiting list to get strong for the operation and they helped enormously in my recovery,” added Joanne.

“So when lockdown started in March I was determined to keep my fitness levels up and did the online Gymophobics exercise plan and began walking around my flat, while chatting on my phone to friends.”

But the 56-year-old has recently found a way round the second stage of her confinement.

“Recently I had the idea to start virtual walking and asked friends and family to video chat with me while they were out walking and I walk round my flat but see their view.

“It’s been great and so far - I’ve been to Lotherton Hall with my friend Alison and her dogs, around The Stray in Harrogate and even along the beach in Jersey!

“Virtual walking has made me feel more connected to the outside world and I’ve found it uplifting.

“My friends have enjoyed it too and told me it’s more fun than walking alone and has been an encouragement to them.

“It is keeping me moving, seeing some lovely scenery, connecting me to friends and the world outside my flat and all without getting my slippers wet!”

Joanne added: “I am not normally a walker as I have mobility issues and cannot walk unaided so I hope that I can continue virtual walking after the lockdown is over.”
