Search for Starbeck Samaritans who helped cyclist, 80, survive collapse

The cyclist, 80, was returning home on his regular 30-mile ride to Fountains Abbey when he collapsed while riding through Starbeck.

It is thought three bystanders - two St John’s Ambulance members and one off-duty policeman - stopped to help, ensuring the cardiac arrest chain of survival began early, before it was continued by ambulance crew and hospital staff.

The cyclist is a regular Harrogate Advertiser Series contributor, and his family have asked we do not name him at this stage.

He remains unconscious in hospital, having been transferred from Harrogate district hospital to Leeds General Infirmary.

Now, his family are seeking to find the three ‘Samaritans’, who may have helped save his life.

His son Mark said: “He was out for his regular Sunday morning bike ride to Fountains Abbey, but when he got back to Starbeck, he collapsed and fell from his bike.

“These Samaritans stopped, and came to his assistance, ringing for an ambulance.

“Their willingness to get involved and provide prompt attention ensured that the cardiac arrest chain of survival was begun early and continued by the ambulance crew and hospital staff.

“Their actions have given the cyclist, a regular contributor to the newspaper, the best possible chances of survival.

“Could I please ask that they make contact so that we can thank can thank them directly.”

The incident took place at 12.20pm on Sunday, January 25.
