Harrogate man to attempt 'world's hardest cycling climbing challenge' for Saint Michael's Hospice

A Harrogate man is bidding to cycle the height of Mount Everest in one session to raise funds for Saint Michael's Hospice tomorrow.

Taking place on Friday, August 7 from 7pm, the climb will consist of 100 repetitions of the aptly named Birsthwith Brute, which is located next to St James' Church in the village.

The intrepid Andy Harris aims to complete 140 miles and more than 29,029 feet of ascent in potentially under 24 hours.

Andy explained why Saint Michael's Hospice in Harrogate is a cause so close to his heart.

He said: "Saint Michael's have looked after some people who have been very important to me.

"This is my way of remembering my friends, saying thank you to the great staff there, and making sure that they can keep this important work going."

Billed as the world's hardest cycling climbing challenge, no sleep is permitted.

Andy said he regards the challenge as "a fun and pretty challenging day out" and he will be fuelled by plenty of refreshments and cakes which will also be available for supporters at a gazebo at the starting point.
