Harrogate care home staff's incredible gesture to help disabled customers after lockdown

Four members of the Disability Action Yorkshire team spent a day with customers at the organisation’s Claro Road care home, cutting hair, giving manicures and beauty treatments.

Before March’s coronavirus lockdown was announced, the 21 residents had already begun self-isolating, all outside visits had ceased – including those from family and friends - and staff were following rigorous health and safety procedures.

And with visiting still limited, a number of staff members who had previously trained as hairdressers and beauticians, decided to treat the residents - the majority of whom are young adults – to a day of pampering.

Disability Action Yorkshire Chief Executive Jackie Snape said: “The vast majority of our customers have not been out of the home since early March, and most were crying out for a haircut.

“We have four staff members who have previously trained and worked as stylists and beauticians, and they spent the day at our Claro Road home crimping and pampering.

“Everyone likes to be pampered and our customers are no exception.

"It was a fantastic day for all concerned, with the staff members getting as much out of the day as their ‘clients’ did.”
