Finding a new walk in life to improve health

A Wetherby woman has used the Coronavirus lockdowns to turn around her life and that of others.

Ruth goodwin of Be Balanced, said she was feeling down when lockdown was announced due to the breakup of her long-term relationship.

“I decided with selfish generosity to show up on Facebook live to entertain whoever was interested by making a plant-based recipe Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning every week from March until September,” said Ruth.

She alternated between sweet and savoury recipes, keeping them super simple so that everyone could replicate them.

“It gave me the impetus to get out of bed, get ready for the camera and demonstrate yummy food,” added Ruth, who developed quite a following on social media.

“I have my own page and I have had lots of lovely chats with people, keeping spirits high while we were all locked down.

Ruth has accumulated over 100 recipes and has now produced an e-book - Food and Mood; Plant Based Recipe Ebook.

She is also a certified Institute for Integrative Nutrition (IIN) health coach and an Eliminate Your Limits Mindset coach, so every one of Ruth’s live on Facebook broadcasts included mindset messages to help people through the challenge in lockdown period.

But her search to improve mental health during these tough times has also seen Ruth become the local walk leader for a national charity run by Bryony Gordon Mental Health Mates.

“I organise a local walk around Wetherby for anyone who wants to walk and talk and combine it with fresh air and exercise,” explained Ruth.

“Two groups over the two months before the current lockdown, were thoroughly enjoyed and she got an amazing response from the people who joined in.

“So many people have been alone a lot of the time this year and it’s been challenging.”

For the time being, during the second lockdown, Ruth is running walks with individuals on a one-to-one basis to adhere to the government guidelines.
