A spokesperson said: "Year 11 students have been working hard preparing for their GCSE mock exams so even though they are having to self-isolate we still wanted to be able to give them the opportunity to sit their exams, whether at home or at school, which is achievable through the iPad for Learning scheme we have at Harrogate Grammar School.

"We have received feedback from parents, carers and students and whilst they know the situation is not ideal they are extremely supportive that the exams are able to go ahead.”

Pupils will also get another chance to complete their GCSE mock exams in school in March.

Schools across the county have been facing similar situations since they reopened in September, with 'bubbles' and groups of students and staff being made to self-isolate after a number of positive coronavirus cases.

Harrogate Grammar School says the number of confirmed cases is what lead to the decision to close the whole year group, rather than just those in close proximity to a positive student or staff member.

The spokesperson added: "The safety of the students and staff are paramount which is why the decision was made.
