People across the nation joined the mass round of applause from their doorsteps, windows and balconies in a bid to raise the spirits of medical staff and show support for all their hard work - and it was such a beautiful moment that some said they were moved to tears.

One resident, Chris Watt, posted in the Covid Co-Operation Harrogate Facebook group, writing: "Thank you Harrogate! My wife is frontline clinical at the hospital and didn't think anyone would notice what she does or would do the applause tonight. She burst into (happy) tears when I dragged her outside at 8 and she heard the noise including all of our small street out clapping."

And his message was met with hundreds of comments from people across the district, heaping praise on those doing a wonderful job and keeping us safe.

Susan Lister Pegg wrote: "I'm only on a small cul de sac but everyone came out, it sounded like a thousand people! Such a small gesture but we're all so proud of the care givers, nurses & doctors who work so hard in such difficult circumstances. A special thank you to the district nurses who looked after my dear mum like she was their own mum. I can only liken them to angels, because they are. Truly amazing humans."

And there have been calls from residents to hold the round of applause every Thursday evening during the pandemic, to remind care givers and key workers what a great job they are doing and how much we appreciate what they are doing.
