While visiting restrictions are in place, relatives and friends of patients currently in hospital can lift spirits by sending letters and photographs to [email protected], and these will be delivered to patients. Alternatively, if you are unable to email, the service can be called Monday to Friday, 9.30am to 4.30pm on 01423 557985, and a message can be taken down.

A Harrogate and District NHS Foundation Trust spokesperson said: "It’s a really simple process: please send your letter to our dedicated email address, including the patient’s full name, date of birth and the ward they are on. We will do the rest.

"We hope this will raise spirits whilst visiting is reduced, and help people stay connected to their loved ones at this time.

"All messages will be treated in the strictest confidence and will be laminated for infection control reasons. Deliveries will take place Monday to Friday, and will be entirely free.

"However, if you would like to make a small donation to our Harrogate Hospital and Community Charity that would be very gratefully received: hhcc.co.uk/donate."
