The situation is also compounded as some countries begin curfews and close hotels.

Harrogate and Knaresborough MP Andrew Jones has been liaising with the Foreign Office and helping to advise the affected families from his constituency, who are in Greece, Spain, Portugal, Ecuador and Peru.

In a statement, Mr Jones said: “I know this is a deeply worrying time for those stranded abroad and for their relatives and friends in this country. I have spoken to the Foreign Office and most of our citizens have been repatriated but there remain areas like Peru and Greece where this has not yet proven possible. The Foreign Secretary is in constant negotiations with other governments to get our people home.

“In the meantime, if you or your relatives are trapped abroad, register for the advice updates on the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) advice pages. These change hour to hour and so registering for updates is a good way to avoid missing anything. Keep talking to tour operators and airlines. Contact the FCO by email if an address is provided on the travel advice pages. And keep sharing information with other UK citizens who are in the same situation as you.”

More on this as we get it.
