Harrogate district set for more heavy snow as Beast from the East looms

Harrogate only area in North Yorkshire to see Covid patient numbers rise as hospital hits another record high

The chilly start to 2021 is set to continue with experts predicting more snow will fall at intervals over the weekend, before heavier snow showers sweep the district from Monday to Wednesday next week.

Back in 2018, a weather front blew in from Siberia heralding days of snow and freezing temperatures for much of the country, now forecasters are predicting a similarly icy result in the coming days.

BBC weather forecasters have predicted heavy showers: “As the colder air crosses the relatively warmer North Sea, heavy showers are likely to develop and move into eastern and central Britain.”

The Met Office has issued a yellow weather warning for snow and ice from Saturday to Monday, warning there could be travel delays, power cuts and impassible paths.

Harrogate has already been hit by three snowstorms this year, the latest coming on Tuesday of this week when once again residents awoke to find a white blanket covering the district.

Some schools looking after the children of key workers were forced to close their doors, while highways offcials warned that roads and pavements were treacherous.

Traffic chaos was kept to a minimum thanks to the number of people working from home during lockdown, but it was still slow-going on the region’s roads as drivers battled through the blizzard.

The Stray was once again a favourite place for many to go and spend their hour of permitted exercise by making snowmen and having a snowball fight. However, North Yorkshire Police did issue a warning to families, urging them not to go sledging, and reminding them that a trip to the slopes would not be seen as an ‘essential journey’.
