School orchestra gets set to play proms

Nidderdale High School is staging a musical proms concert on Saturday June 18 to celebrate the breadth and variety of music played in the Dale.

Music will be provided by the school’s own Bridge Band and the Nidderdale Community Orchestra, as well as other community groups, and will be accompanied by an afternoon tea of scones, jam and cream.

The Bridge Band, consisting of pupils from Years 7-9 and some Year 4s from feeder primary schools, meets weekly at Nidderdale High School and is regularly invited to perform in the community.

At the proms concert, it will offer much-loved renditions of songs such as the themes to Mission Impossible and the Pink Panther.

The Nidderdale Community Orchestra was formed over four years ago, performing under the baton of Bryan Western, the conductor of the Harrogate Symphony Orchestra.

The June concert will see the ensemble playing a selection of short classical pieces together with a selection of film title themes and music from the shows.

There will also be a jazz band and singers from the school’s year 7 and 8 pupils performing an eclectic mix of songs from the classic Ain’t No Mountain High Enough to Coldplay’s Fix You.

African drumming is also on the agenda, as is the school’s vocal duo A2Z, stars of the recent AMP Awards.

The Bridge wind band is part of the Wider Opportunities initiative to encourage more young people to learn a musical instrument.

It has developed a very high reputation for its specially arranged versions of popular pieces such as The Flintstones and performs regularly at venues

throughout the surrounding area, including most recently at Ripon Cathedral.
