Runners scoop top trophy for second year in a row

A team of cross country runners from Belmont Grosvenor are celebrating after retaining the top trophy at a prestigious inter-schools sporting event.

Pupils from the Harrogate prep school were crowned champions for the second year running at the 18th Annual Junior Schools’ Sports Tournament held at Queen Margaret’s School at York.

More than 100 girls from 11 different prep schools across the country were invited to the annual sporting competition – with competitions in both cross country running and netball.

Belmont Grosvenor’s cross country runners beat off tough competition to take the top title – while the girls’ netball team were runners-up in the netball contest.

Gillian Furniss, Head of Girls’ PE at the prep school, based at Swarcliffe Hall, Birstwith, Harrogate, said she was delighted with the girls’ success at the tournament.

“This is a fabulous result for our pupils – they really deserved their victory and performed incredibly well at both cross country and netball. The girls put in a lot of practice both in lessons at school and in before/after-school sports clubs, and we are incredibly proud of them all.

“The girls won the cross-country last year so it was a great achievement to retain the title, as well as good preparation for some of the them who are competing in the Biathlon Championships in London,” she added.

And 11 pupils from Years 4 to 6 qualified for The British Schools’ Modern Biathlon Championship, held at Crystal Palace, London, last weekend.

It is the largest number of pupils who have travelled down to the capital for the event since they first qualified for the prestigious event four years ago.
