Rossett holds virtual elections for sixth heads

Rossett School’s election of Head Boy and Girl took on a different format this year as students took part in virtual campaigns from home.

Following a closely fought contest between 13 candidates, Oliver Houseman has been named as the new head boy and Sophie Jones the new head girl.

Oliver, who is studying Geography, English Language and Media Studies, said: “I’m delighted to be the head boy at Rossett, especially following such a different election process to usual; it was new and exciting for everyone to work to an online campaign brief.”

Sophie, who is studying Geography, Science and Sociology, said: “As head girl, I’ll be working hard to fulfil my election pledges for 2020/21.”

Under normal circumstances, the election campaigns would have taken place in school, with students canvassing votes across the Sixth Form, taking part in hustings and delivering speeches.

But with remote learning continuing until the end of the academic year for some students, this year’s campaigns were carried out virtually.

As well as an online interview with the Sixth Form team, students created a two-minute video or presentation and an A4 poster which explained what they would bring to the role.

Accessible online campaigns were made available to Year 12 students and staff, before a vote was taken.

Alongside Oliver and Sophie, Meghana Biswakarma has been announced as the new deputy head girl, while Karthik Krishnan and Sam Cliff will share the role of deputy head boy after a close-run tie.

Head of Sixth Form, Brendan Foley, said: “The head boy, head girl and deputies are important ambassadors for the Sixth Form and the election process provides a great learning experience, as well as lots of fun, for our students.

“So, despite the challenges that Covid-19 has thrown our way, we felt it was important for the annual election to go ahead. Congratulations to our new ambassadors.”
