Rossett Adult Learning was forced to adapt its summer programme when coronavirus restrictions were imposed, offering sessions virtually rather than in the usual classroom-based way.

Starting in April, 71 of the planned Summer Programme courses were held online for an initial trial period of five weeks. Sessions covered a range of subjects in art, culture, history, crafts, gardening, music, exercise and languages.

The courses, which are due to finish this week, have been accessed by 431 students and proved so successful that they are now being extended for a further five weeks after the May half term.

In addition, 18 new courses are being added, including archaeology, short story writing, mindfulness, relaxation and drawing. There will also be two special free classes running during half term showing people how to make their own face mask, with or without a sewing machine.

Rossett Adult Learning manager Melissa Horberry said: “We’re delighted the virtual classes have been so popular that we can confidently continue them after half term, with additional courses being offered as well.

“Feedback from students about the initial trial sessions has been very positive, with many saying how much they have appreciated the courses, been surprised at their ability to manage technology, and enjoyed the opportunity to carry on learning.”

Rossett Adult Learning has a large and vibrant community of adult learners aged between 18 and 90.

Melissa added: “We have such a fantastic sense of community and wellbeing here and I think our online classes have helped keep that alive.”

The virtual Summer Programme courses will run June and July for five days a week at various times, including daytime and evening classes.
