High pupils cycle to gold and bronze

Students from Nidderdale High School finished first and third at the recent North Yorkshire 2016 School Games Cycling Finals.

The two teams of four Year 7 and 8 students held off fierce competition to win gold and bronze medals against older competitors.

“It’s a fantastic achievement,” said Matt Coad, sports teacher. “Our school is all about opportunity and I’m delighted that the students had a chance to show what they can do against much bigger schools.”

The races were held at the purpose-built, traffice free, one kilometre York Cycle Track where youngsters competed in a team time trial and a relay, with Nidderdale in the top three.

With overall rankings based on points scored, Nidderdale took first and third spot on the final podium.

Nidderdale’s success continued in the individual races that brought the competition to a close.

Dexter Leeming-Sykes and Molly Howard won their races, while John Barker came second in his and Will Hall and Benjy Howard both finished on the podium in their events.
