Harrogate's Truth Legal founder looks at same sex marriages in webinar for aspiring lawyers

In addition to examining the courtroom argument centred around human rights and discrimination, Andrew Gray, the founder of Harrogate-based Truth Legal, will offer his young audience advice on how to succeed in pursuing a career in law today, Friday, July 17.

The team at Truth Legal - which was started by Andrew in April 2012 with the vision to pursue justice, in affordably for its clients – has launched the webinars as a way of helping law students in the last two years of school with their studies.

The first webinar, which attracted scores of lower and upper sixth pupils from schools across the Harrogate District, explored Shamima Begum – who left her native Britain, aged 15, to join ISIS in Syria - in the context of British Citizenship.

The second today looks at to what extent, if any, a person with a faith-based objection to gay marriage and same-sex relationships can act on that objection when providing goods and services to the public?

Andrew Gray said: “The coronavirus pandemic has robbed law students of the opportunity to attend lectures and classes, hence us launching these webinars as a way of supporting them in their studies. We have had to cancel all work experience placements, too.

“These sessions are designed to hone the students’ legal skills, offer them the chance to ‘network’, gain an insight into the legal profession and to help map out their legal career.

“The cases we have chosen have each sparked a huge amount of controversy and have divided public and legal opinion, and we explore the legal ramifications.

“The first was a great success with some really interesting and well-thought through questions. I think we got as much out of it as the audience. Our whole ethos is about supporting people in times of need, and these webinars are an extension of that.”

Today's webinar examines what happened after Gareth Lee walked into Ashers Bakery, in Belfast, in 2014 and requested a cake displaying the caption “Support Gay Marriage”, the owners refused to carry out this request.

There followed one of the UK’s most lengthy and contested legal battles of the decade.

In addition to exploring the legal aspects of each case, the sessions also offer students career advice in the form of different study routes, work experience and how to get a job in law.

Those students who attending the sessions and subsequently complete the follow-up task, will receive a Certificate of Completion.
