Community work rewarded

Moorside Primary School and Nursery has received a prestigious award for its community work during the first lockdown and celebrating its nurturing ethos with a ‘vision for excellence’ for all pupils.

During the first lockdown, the staff pulled together to welcome the children of key workers and extended it to pupils from other schools that were unable to open.

“The school quickly recognised a need for nursery care for very young children and babies, so the provision was extended to provide childcare for children under three as a local authority community hub, with staff giving freely of their time,” said a spokesman.

Moorside’s pupils and parents were also supported with home learning packs and phone calls - with staff reading bedtime stories on YouTube every night to give parents a break and allow children to stay connected to their teachers.

Extra support was offered to parents of children with additional needs.

The prestigious Inclusion Quality Mark comes after a virtual assessment in November.

The report stated: “Moorside Primary now has far greater sustainability, is respected by the local community and is enjoying the benefits of a refurbishment. The new buildings have improved the learning environment and there is an overarching aim to sustain high quality provision.”

Report author Mary Hewitson recommended that Moorside consider applying for Centre of Excellence status.

She stated: “My online visit was made memorable by the strong sense of teamwork under the leadership of an inspirational Headteacher.

“The determination of all staff to understand the complexities of barriers to learning and a commitment to serve the local community are the hallmarks of this inclusive school.”

Headteacher, Claire Rowett said: “Inclusion promotes equal opportunities for all pupils, whatever their age, gender, ethnicity, attainment and background.

“It pays particular attention to the provision made for, and the achievement of, different groups of pupils within our school.

“At Moorside difference is celebrated.

“We are committed to ensuring that our school is a welcoming place and that we offer a high quality education.

“The Inclusion Quality Mark reflects the contributions and support from governors, parents, staff and pupils, who continue to work together ever more closely, even through times when we’ve had to stay apart, in what has been an unprecedented year.”
