Charity steps up food delivery

Wetherby in Support of the Elderly (WiSE) is adding fresh produce like milk, bread, fruit and vegetables to the parcels its army of dedicated volunteers deliver to people of all ages in the town and surrounding villages.

The move follows successful bids by the charity for grant funding from local and national government and local councillors.

Mark Dobson, Chief Operating Officer at WiSE said: “For months now our foodbanks, hubs and networks have been doing an absolutely incredible job getting food to vulnerable, shielding and isolated people who are really in need of help.

“After several months we are becoming far more adept at this and are now able to adapt our offer so that people who are shielding or self-isolating can now, through us, access fresh food as well as the usual tinned, non-perishable goods which foodbanks so generously provide as standard.

“We decided to enhance our offer using the funding we’d acquired and working with third sector partners, Fareshare and Leeds City Council to vary the range of produce we are able to offer those who are accessing this vital free food delivery service.

“Although we predominantly work with older people, as has been the case throughout the pandemic we’re also helping people of all ages who might be self-isolating or shielding because they are classed as clinically vulnerable to the virus.”
