The family-run company, which is based in Helmsley, said it was shutting its shop on Cambridge Street due to the landlord’s redevelopment plans.

It stressed that no jobs would be lost.

In a statement, director Simon Thomas said: “It is with great sadness we announce the closure of our Harrogate store. Thomas’ lease recently came to an end, and the landlord had plans in place to redevelop the Victoria Shopping Centre and create space for a new, bigger Next store which means that we have no choice but to move out.

“The business has traded very well in Harrogate for the last 15 years and we are genuinely sorry to be departing.

“We are very grateful to our many loyal and valued customers, and it’s a shame this all happened at such short notice. We are pleased, however, to be able to advise that all the shop team have been relocated to other local shops and we have been able to retain full employment.

“Thomas the Baker has other shops locally in both Knaresborough and Ripon town centres and we would be delighted to welcome our hungry Harrogate customers in to these shops at any time!”

Thomas the Baker has 31 other shops, mainly across North and East Yorkshire, including its flagship store and bakery at Helmsley.
