The restaurant has created 32 jobs with the opening of its new 102-seater venue in the town’s newest restaurant quarter on Parliament Street.

Nando’s is the latest big name restaurant to come to the town, joining Jamie’s Italian and Bar & Grill at the Harrogate House site.

It already has a network of restaurants in Yorkshire but this one, in the 3,000ft sq property next to Jamie’s, will be its first in Harrogate.

Paul Reason, regional MD of Nando’s, said: “We’re thrilled to finally open the doors to our new Harrogate restaurant. Parliament Street is a great location, and will offer shoppers, cinema goers, locals and visitors a fantastic Nando’s experience.”

The chain has been carrying out ‘dry runs’ for its staff this week in the run-up to today’s official launch.

Excited passers-by were reporting via social media on Monday and Tuesday how they were invited in to try out the food as staff prepared for the big opening.

Last October, the Harrogate Advertiser reported that Nando’s was planning to open on Parliament Street.

Speaking at the time, property analyst Harriett Renny, from developers Lateral Property, said: “In the consumer research we carried out, Nando’s was a brand that was clearly in demand.

“Nando’s will perfectly complement the already popular Jamie’s Italian and The Pit, adding to Harrogate’s strong blend of national chains and independent businesses.”

Nando’s instructed Raworths in the property deal, with total investment in the project worth a six-figure sum. The Harrogate restaurant boasts a huge chandelier made from over 3,000 beads as its centrepiece.

Andrew Lawson, commercial property solicitor at Raworths, said: “It is very much a feather in our caps to work with an internationally-known brand like Nando’s and we look forward to working with them in the future.”

The Portuguese chicken restaurant has grown in popularity in recent years, and was named the most popular casual dining brand in Britain. It now operates more than 1,000 outlets in around 30 countries.

Nando’s is best known for its peri-peri spiced meals and has attracted a devoted following. A Nando’s for Harrogate’ campaign page was set up on Facebook in 2009 and attracted more than 2,500 supporters.
