Lockdown fightback: Harrogate's William & Victoria restaurant steps up its takeaway service

Exclusive: Harrogate Spring Water talks about its plans to protect environment as part of major expansion

Originally opened in the 1970s as the town’s very first wine bar, William & Victoria has been owned and run with huge success by the Straker family for more than 20 years.

Owners Jo and David Straker pride themselves in creating a comfortingly traditional but relaxed atmosphere at the restaurant and adapting to whatever situation is thrown at them.

But they admit it is tough, despite a new £4.6bn economic support package from the Government with new one-off cash grants worth up to £9,000 per property for mainly pubs, cafes and shops.

But this Harrogate institution located towards the bottom of Cold Bath Road is determined to remain open for takeaways under lockdown as per Government rules.

Jo Straker said: "There are several smaller grants available this time but it still won’t be sufficient to pay the fixed costs.

"Fortunately, we have wonderful customers who have continued to support us through this tough year and a resilient team of staff who have adapted to whatever is thrown at the hospitality industry so we know we will hit the ground running when allowed to open fully again."

Loved for its period décor, cosy atmosphere and a menu focused on the best of British classics, the Strakers aim to bring a bit of the bistro restaurants charm - and food - to people's homes while we are all being advised to avoid social contact.

Jo Straker said: "We are offering a takeaway service Fridays and Saturdays 5-8pm and Sunday 12-6pm for the busy times when demand is highest.

"The usual W&V classics such as Lamb Henry will be on the takeaway menu with some weekly specials and the very popular Sunday Roasts.

"Details will be available on our website shortly."

Under the latest lockdown rules which may run until March at least, restaurants, bars and cafes can stay open for takeway and click and collect (though no alcohol).
