After a 10-year career at NYnet, its new CEO has scooped a top award

Alastair Taylor, CEO of digital infrastructure business NYnet, has been named Business Leader of the Year in the Harrogate Advertiser Business Excellence Awards just over a year after taking up the role.

Alastair, 37, became CEO last January although he has been part of the team at the North Yorkshire technology firm since 2013.

Since joining, he has played an important role in the firm’s evolution and has personally programme directed £60m of digital projects for North Yorkshire.

After being appointed CEO Alastair oversaw a complete rebrand for NYnet and launched an ambitious programme of growth to bring high speed, reliable and locally managed full fibre to the region’s business parks.

Previously only public sector organisations with a high need for resilience – such as the NHS and fire service – could take advantage of NYnet’s robust, speedy full fibre network.

Reaping rewards

“Now we can reap the economic rewards of the groundwork we have done over the past 15 years to put North Yorkshire at the forefront of digital connectivity,” said Alastair.

“The expansion of our premium full fibre service into business parks will help put the region on the map for digital services and will bring our gigabit fibre solutions to more than 1,000 businesses across the county, boosting growth,” he added.

NYnet continues to work with the NHS and emergency services and is the UK’s largest provider of the public sector roaming service Govroam. The firm was also behind a project that has recently brought free public wi-fi to 22 North Yorkshire market towns.

Talented team

“None of this would have been possible without our incredibly talented team who are as committed as I am to maximise the benefits we can bring to organisations of all kinds that operate right here on our doorstep,” Alastair said.

“The fact that we look after our network and customers ourselves makes our work very satisfying because we know we have the capability to make a tangible difference to the prosperity and wellbeing of those living and working in North Yorkshire.”

Under Alastair’s leadership, NYnet has connected 212 North Yorkshire schools to its network, leading North Yorkshire to be ranked third in the country for high-speed school broadband.

In rural communities, tens of thousands of homes and businesses have benefited from an ambitious programme of superfast broadband connectivity thanks to NYnet. The multi-million-pound scheme to dramatically enhance broadband speeds in the county began a decade ago, with the third and final phase now complete and more than 190,000 premises now enjoying faster and more reliable broadband connections.

As the company looks to innovate to meet North Yorkshire’s future digital needs, NYnet has recently overseen the deployment of a Long Range Low Power Wide Area Network (LoRaWAN) to enable North Yorkshire to be at the forefront of developments for the Internet of Things.

Businesses in North Yorkshire can now register their interest in NYnet full fibre business broadband. To find out more about connecting to fast, reliable, locally managed full fibre by NYnet email [email protected].
