Coronavirus latest - major event in Harrogate will go ahead today

One of the UK's biggest gaming festivals is to go ahead at Harrogate Convention Centre today, Friday with a series of precautions against the spread of coronavirus.

AireCon, the second biggest analogue gaming festival in the UK, opened it doors this morning to thousands of gaming enthusiasts from all over the world.

But organisers of the exciting two days of gaming, exhibitions, product launches, large scale social games, special guests and more which takes over the sprawling halls of the convention centre, have been taking official advice at regular interval before going ahead.

A spokesperson said: "AireCon is very much going ahead.

"We’re closely following the guidance of Public Health England and the government. Hand sanitising stations have been installed throughout the convention centre as well as clearly displayed guidance from the government on hygiene and cleanliness.

"Ticket holders were contacted before the event with updates and encouraged to follow the government’s guidelines on self isolating if showing symptoms.

"We’re keeping up to date with the situation as it develops and will continue to follow the guidance of Public Health England - so AireCon is a go until we’re told otherwise."

Whether to continue with public events is becoming a topic of serious discussion in Harrogate as various organisers weigh up what is the most responsible thing to do.

Discussions are taking place about whether to carry on with the latest Vinyl Sessions charity event for Harrogate hospital which was scheduled to take place next Wednesday at Starling Independent Bar Cafe Kitchen with a classic album by REM.
