Jane Barrett’s Career Bootcamp will put graduates – and those about the graduate – through their paces and prepare them for the interview and assessment process.

The intensive one-day event will be facilitated by graduate recruitment experts who have worked with major FTSE 100 employers.

“Since the introduction of tuition fees, the financial burden of supporting a young person through university is one of the largest faced by families and this event is designed to help graduates turn their degrees into job offers that will justify that commitment and expense,” said Ms Barrett.

“There was a time when a degree from a good university was a passport to pretty much anything career-wise, but years of recession have made it much harder for graduates to secure that first rung on the ladder and this event is all about giving them the skills to achieve their career goals.”

After a career in HR recruiting for numerous blue-chip companies, Ms Barrett has spent the past 15 years at the helm of Harrogate-based Career Farm, which provides career workshops and mock assessment centres to business schools and universities.

“The selection process for graduate jobs has never been tougher – online assessments and video interviews are a way of whittling down vast numbers of applications for each post – so it’s not surprising that applicants are worried they’ll never get off the starting blocks,” said Ms Barrett.

Her Career Bootcamp will be held at Pavilions of Harrogate at the Great Yorkshire Showground on Saturday, June 27, from 9 to 5.30pm.

For every 10 places sold Ms Barrett will provide a free community place for a local student who can’t afford to fund a place themselves.

The bootcamp will provide access to a unique online training course to help attendees identify their best career choice. It will also focus on CVs, applications, interview preparation and creating a professional social media profile.

The final stage will be a mock interview process with feedback from experienced graduate recruiters.
